Italian festivals – The Palio of the Goose

Last Modified: August 9, 2021

If you’ve ever visited Italy, it’s possible that you’ve come across a festival or two. Yes, because in Italy there are many festivals every year, especially in spring and in summer.

One of these festivals is called the Palio of the Goose and it’s very interesting to see.

Il Palio dell’Oca – The Palio of the Goose

The Palio of the Goose is organized every year in Cagli, a town in the Marche region, on the second Sunday of August and it’s a very important and peculiar event.

The first edition of this palio is very recent, since it dates back only to 1987.

Il Palio of the Goose is like a living board game. The participants are a group of people representing the four districts of the town: Saint’Andrew; Saint’Augustine, Saint’Angelo Maggiore and Saint Francis.

The board game has 54 boxes and each one of them corresponds to a specific challenge like horse racing, shooting with bow and arrow, barrel running, running on stilts, and so on.

The game works like this: every district rolls the dice in turn and a representative of their district, that plays a living marker, moves from box to box. Now, to stay in the box where the marker landed, each district has to win a challenge. If it fails, the marker goes back to the box where it was before rolling the dice.

To make the game even more interesting, there are special boxes that allow districts to double or to halve their score, to miss a turn, etc.

The aim of the game is, of course, to get to the 54th box. The district that gets there wins an iron statue depicting a goose for a year.

After the game is over, celebrations continue in the streets and in the taverns.

Hai mai visto il Palio dell’Oca? Ti piacerebbe?

Have you ever seen the Palio of the Goose? Would you like to?
