How to learn four new Italian words from the word arcobaleno

Last Modified: September 6, 2021

Alcune settimane fa, qui dove vivo, ci sono stati dei temporali. Dopo alcuni di essi, sono apparsi degli arcobaleni.

Some weeks ago, here where I live, we had some thunderstorms. After some of them, some rainbows appeared.

Quando ho visto il primo, stranamente, mi è venuta in mente la parola inglese “rainbow” prima della parola italiana.

When I saw the first one, strangely, the English word “rainbow” appeared my mind before the Italian word.

Ma è stato un bene perché da lì, ho iniziato a fare delle connessioni con l’italiano. E mi è venuto in mente che possiamo imparare almeno quattro parole italiane partendo dalla parola arcobaleno.

But this was good because from there, I started to make connections with Italian. And it came to my mind that we can learn at least four new Italian words starting from the word arcobaleno – rainbow.

Sei pronto? Iniziamo!

Ready? Let’s start

Arcobaleno

La parola italiana per rainbow, arcobaleno, è composta da due parole diverse: arco + baleno (lampo di luce).

The Italian word for rainbow, arcobaleno, is composed of two different words: arco (bow) + baleno (flash of light).

Se avevi dei problemi a memorizzare la parola italiana arcobaleno, forse sapere che è composta da queste due parole adesso ti aiuterà a ricordarla.

If you had problems memorizing the Italian word for rainbow, maybe knowing that it’s composed of these two words will help you remember it now.

Esempio:

Example:

a. Guarda! Che bell’arcobaleno!

a. Look! What a beautiful rainbow!

Balena

La parola italiana baleno, che hai appena imparato, è molto simile a un’altra parola italiana: balena.

The Italian word baleno, that you’ve just learn, is very similar to another Italian word: balena.

Però, queste due parole non hanno niente a che fare l’una con l’altra. Infatti, la balena in italiano è un animale, specificatamente un cetaceo, in inglese “whale”.

However, these two words have nothing to do with each other. Indeed, balena is an animal in Italian, specifically a cetacean, a whale.

Esempio:

Example:

b. Quando sono andata in Nuova Zelanda ho visto due balene

b. When I went to New Zeland I saw two whales

Balenare

I significati più comuni di questo verbo italiano sono almeno due.

The most common meanings of this Italian verb are at least two.

Il primo significato di balenare si riferisce al tempo ed è lampeggiare. Il secondo è apparire all’improvviso. Può riferirsi a sentimenti o pensieri.

The first meaning of balenare refers to the weather and is to be lightning. The second one is to appear all of a sudden. It can refer to feelings or thoughts.

Esempi:

Examples:

c. E’/ha balenato* tutta la notte

c. There has been lightning all night

*Ricordati che in italiano è molto più comune usare il verbo lampeggiare al posto di balenare.

*Bring in mind that in Italian is much more common to use the verb lampeggiare instead of balenare.

d. Per un momento negli occhi gli balenò l’ira

d. For a moment anger flashed in his eyes

e. Improvvisamente, le balenò un’idea

e. All of a sudden, she had an idea

In un baleno

Infine, l’espressione italiana in un baleno è usata per dire che qualcosa avviene molto velocemente.

Finally, the Italian expression in un baleno is used to say that something happens all of a sudden.

Esempi:

Examples:

f. In un baleno, il ladro le rubò la borsetta

f. In a flash, the thief stole her purse

g. E’ successo tutto in un baleno

g. Everything happened in a flash
