Christmas in Italy. Five reasons why I love it

Last Modified: December 22, 2019

Christmas in Italy. Five reasons why I love itNatale sta arrivando, Natale sta arrivando!!!

Christmas is coming, Christmas is coming!!! Ok, ok, I know, I’m a grown-up, I shouldn’t be as excited as a six-year-old, but you know what? I don’t care, I am super happy.

Christmas is the only day in the whole year that makes me almost love Winter, that makes me almost forget about the terrible cold weather we often “enjoy” in northern Italy.

The reasons why I love Christmas in Italy so much have nothing to do with getting presents, they’re linked to something else.

MOTIVO N.1 – BELLEZZA

REASON N.1 – BEAUTY
At Christmas, in Italy, cities, small towns, and even houses change their usual appearance, showing beautiful lights and decorations as if they were ready for a party.

MOTIVO N.2 – FELICITA’

REASON N.2 – HAPPINESS
As cities and towns become more and more beautiful, people seem to get happier and happier. Did you ever noticed? During Christmas time, people you don’t even know smiles at you more often while saying “good morning!”, and they are usually even more willing to start a conversation with you, without forgetting to wish you “happy holidays” before saying goodbye.

REASON N.3 – NEW THINGS TO DO AND DISCOVER
Christmas markets appear everywhere, even in the smallest of towns. And I have to admit, I love visiting Christmas markets, especially those where you can find handmade jewelry and handmade wool/wooden objects, and where you can discover new artists.

But in the last few years, there’s another thing that you can see more and more often in some Italian towns and that’s outdoor skating rinks. If you’ve never tried ice skating that can be the perfect occasion for you to do something new.

REASON N.4 – FAMILY
Another reason why I love Christmas in Italy so much is because for me it’s a family holiday. At Christmas I have the opportunity to meet all my relatives – and believe me, there’s a lot of them. During the year it can be pretty difficult to see everyone since we live in different towns and we have different working days and hours. But at Christmas, somehow, everyone manages to get to my aunt’s house, even for just a couple of hours to say happy holidays, and catch up.

MOTIVO N.5 – INTROSPEZIONE

REASON N.5 – INTROSPECTION
Finally, Christmas is the perfect time to do some introspection. I have to admit that I usually do it naturally on a pretty regular basis, over the rest of the year, but Christmas is one of my special times to do some more. I find it particularly useful. I usually start thinking about people I loved that sadly are no more with us, about what I have, about how I can be better, about how I can make other’s people days a little bit brighter, – and other thousands of thoughts – and about the fact that I should take that feeling of happiness that Christmas gives me and spread it into the world day by day, because every day can, and should be, a happy and magic one.

Now it’s your turn. Answer one of these questions in Italian to make some practice.
– Have you ever spend Christmas in Italy? How was it?
– Do you like Christmas? Why?

Oh, a proposito, mi stavo quasi dimenticando…Buon Natale!

Oh, by the way, I was almost forgetting…Merry Christmas!
