Tarantella

Last Modified: November 28, 2022

Avete mai sentito parlare di Tarantella? No?

Have you ever heard of Tarantella? No? Then, you’re about to learn everything about this important part of the Italian culture.

Cos’è la Tarantella – What is Tarantella?

Tarantella is a group of southern Italian folk dances that are typically performed in Puglia.

It’s said that the name of this dance comes from the Italian word Tarantola – tarantula.

Indeed, in the past, wolf spiders were very common in Southern regions and people believed that their bite was highly venomous, causing tremors, blurry vision, and blacking out.

Southern Italians soon discovered that there was a way to heal people who got bitten by wolf spiders, that’s to say tarantella.

People who were bitten were surrounded by people, who started to play tarantella. Meanwhile, the “patients” danced for hours or even for days, until they completely recovered.

Tarantella has a fast upbeat tempo and is accompanied by tambourines. It’s a flirtation dance, where dancers are dressed in traditional red, white and green outfits and dance in couples.

Women generally play a tambourine while dancing, while men focus only on the dance, trying to charm their partner.
