Let’s visit Masino Castle

Last Modified: July 6, 2022

Italy has an incredible number of castles scattered all over its territory that you can visit. One of these castles is Masino Castle.

Masino Castle is located in Caravino a small town not too far away from Turin and close to the lake of Viverone.

So, if you’re in Turin and decide to see something interesting nearby, Masino castle and the lake of Viverone can be a good idea.

Il castello – The castle

Il castello risale all’XI secolo.

The castle dates back to the 11th century. Its construction was ordered by the Valperga family, a noble family that claimed to be descended from King Arduino of Ivrea.

The castle was built on a hill in the center of the Ivrea plain, a very strategic position. It was surrounded by high defensive walls and watchtowers for protection. Due to its position, the castle suffered numerous attacks in the past from noble families, who wanted to get their hands on the area.

In the 16th century, the castle was demolished and rebuilt as a noble residence, so the defensive walls and the watchtowers disappeared.

After the last inhabitant of the castle died, his son sold the building to FAI, Fondo Ambiente Italiano (National Trust of Italy), a private non-profit organization created with the purpose of protecting Italian tangible cultural heritage.

Nowadays if you visit the castle, you can see a very good number of frescoes, refined ancient furniture, a beautiful museum showing eighteen-century carriages, a big park with a maze in it, a library hosting more than 25,000 antique volumes and panoramic terraces.

The castle can also be hired to celebrate private events such as weddings, ceremonies, shows, business meetings, film shoots, etc.

If you want to visit Masino Castle, you can do it from 10am to 6pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
