Il Castello Aragonese – The Aragonese Castle

Il castello Aragonese che si può vedere oggi è un castello medievale edificato su un isolotto vulcanico che si trova proprio vicino ad Ischia, una delle più belle isole italiane. L’isolotto è collegato ad Ischia tramite un ponte in pietra.

The Aragonese castle that you can see today is a medieval castle located on a small volcanic islet right next to Ischia, one of the most beautiful Italian islands. The islet is linked to Ischia by a stone bridge.

Prima che venisse costruito il castello Aragonese, c’era un altro castello costruito nel 474 a.C da Gerone I di Siracusa.

Before Aragonese castle was built, there was another castle built in 474 BC by Hiero I of Syracuse.

This castle has a long and troubled history.

Nel 12esimo secolo il castello è stato conquistato dalle forze sveve ed è diventato la residenza di famiglie nobili.

In the 12th century the castle was conquered by Swabian forces and became the residence of noble families.

Tre secoli dopo, il castello è stato conquistato da Alfonso di Aragona ed è stato impiegato come roccaforte in tempi di guerra e come residenza reale in tempi di pace.

Three centuries later, the castle was conquered by Alfonso of Aragon and was used as a stronghold in times of war and as a royal residence in times of peace.

Nel 17esimo secolo, il castello è stato occupato dalle forse spagnole e poi dalle forze austriache. Nel 18esimo secolo il castello è stato nuovamente conquistato dagli spagnoli che l’hanno usato come prigione politica.

In the 17th century, the castle was occupied by Spanish forces and then by Austrian forces. In the 18th century the castle was conquered again by Spanish who used it as a political prison.

Nel 19esimo secolo, mentre era sotto la dominazione francese, la vita del castello costruito da Gerone I di Siracusa è giunta al termine. Infatti, dopo una battaglia tra le forze francesi e quelle anglo-borboniche il castello è stato severamente danneggiato.

In the 19th century, while it was under the French domination, the life of the castle built by Hiero I of Syracuse came to an end. Indeed, after a battle between French and Anglo-Bourbon forces, the castle was seriously damaged.

Nella seconda metà del 19esimo secolo Ischia è diventata parte del Regno d’Italia e quello che rimaneva del castello è diventata proprietà statale.

In the second half of the 19th century Ischia became part of the Kingdom of Italy and what was left of the castle became property of the State.

Nel 1911, Nicola Ernesto Mattera, un avvocato, ha comprato il castello dallo stato e ha iniziato dei lunghi lavori di ristrutturazione.

In 1911, Nicola Ernesto Mattera, a lawyer, bought the castle from the state and started long works of restoration.

Oggi il castello è ancora di proprietà degli eredi di Mattera, i quali si prendono cura della sua ristrutturazione e organizzano eventi culturali.

Nowadays the castle is still owned by Mattera’s heirs that take care of its restauration and organize cultural events.

Si può visitare il castello Aragonese tutto l’anno a partire dalle 9 del mattino e il biglietto costa intorno ai 12 euro.

You can visit the Aragonese castle all the year from 9 am and the ticket costs around 12 euros.
