The spring of Arethusa – Siracusa’s legends

Last Modified: January 15, 2022

Siracusa is a very famous Italian city located in Sicily. There are many things to see there like archeological sites, spectacular caves, the archeological museum, a big castle and, of course the spring of Arethusa, la fonte Aretusa.

Scopriamola.

Also, there is a famous legend linked to the spring of Arethusa. Let’s see it.

La leggenda della fonte Aretusa – The legend of the spring of Arethusa

According to the legend, Arethusa was one of the nymphs that followed the Goddess Diana everywhere.

During a hunting trip the girl detached from the group and got lost.

Alfeo, a young man, noticed her and, struck by her beauty, fell in love with her instantly. So, he decided to approach her and confess her everything.

However, Arethusa did not share the same feelings for Alfeo and turned him down.

But Alfeo had no intensions of giving up, so he kept pressing her until Arethusa, tired of him and a little bit scared, decided to call Diana for help.

La Dea Diana apparve e prima avvolse Aretusa in una nuvola e poi la trasformò in una fonte.

The Goddess Diana appeared and first wrapped Arethusa in a cloud and then transformed her into a spring.

After this, Alfeo was desperate. So, he decided to ask the Gods for help. The Gods felt pity for him. So, they decided to help him by transforming him into a river, and placing its spring in Greece. From Greece, after crossing the Ionian sea, he was able to join his beloved Arethusa again.

Interesting fact: the spring of Arethusa is also called the fountain of papyrus since there grow wild papyrus.

Have you ever been to Siracusa? What did you like the most?
