The Legend of Alaric’s Treasure

Last Modified: November 28, 2022

Vediamola.

There are many legends about famous places in Italy or about famous characters. One of these legends is about King Alaric I and his treasure. Let’s see it.

Alaric’s Treasure

In 410 AD, King Alaric I lead the Visigoths to the siege and sack of Rome. After succeeding in the task, he continued toward Southern Italy with the aim of getting to Sicily and then to Africa.

However, by the time he got to Cosenza, he had developed malaria. His conditions deteriorated rapidly, and he died within hours.

Following their traditions, the Visigoths buried Alaric in the bed of the Busento River, along with his armor and the treasure they took from Rome.

To do so, the Visigoths forced some slaves to build structures to divert the course of the river, and then to lead the river back to its natural bed. At the end of the procedure, the Visigoths slaughtered every slave to prevent them from predating the tomb in the future or from revealing the secret.

In the 20th and 21st century many people have tried to find the treasure. In 2015, for example, took place the biggest treasure hunt ever taken to find Alaric’s treasure. Drones and georadars were used but despite all the excavations there was no trace of Alaric’s treasure.

Così, la leggenda continua. Il tesoro di Alarico verrà mai ritrovato?

So, the legend continues. Will Alaric’s treasure ever be found?
