The legend about the origins of Turin

Last Modified: October 28, 2021

Every city in the world has probably its legends and Turin – is no exception.

Turin is a city in the North of Italy famous for its historical cafés, the Mole Antonelliana, the Chapel where the shroud is held, for chocolate pralines and many other things.

There are many legends about this city but one of the most creative and weird is probably the one linked to the origins of Turin, of the name itself of the city.

La leggenda – The legend

According to the legend, the origins of Turin come from “taurus”, bull.

Perché?

Why is that?

Well, according to the legend, a long time ago Turin was just a small town built near the Po river.

Unfortunately, its inhabitants didn’t have a happy life since the town was the hunting territory of a big dragon. Regularly, the dragon killed animals, the inhabitants and burned their houses.

Soon the inhabitants grew tired of the dragon and decided to do something about it.

So, one day, someone came up with a crazy idea: take the best and most powerful animal they had and send him to fight the dragon. The choice fell on a big and strong bull.

However, the possibility that a bull could beat a dragon were really scarce. So, the inhabitants of Turin came up with another crazy idea. They decided to mix water with wine and to make the bull drink it and get drunk.

Then, they brought the bull in the woods, near the dragon’s nest, and they left him there.

Thanks to all the alcohol in his body, the bull started to become angrier and stronger. So, once he saw the dragon, he attacked him without a second thought. After a long battle, the bull managed to kill the dragon but he was wounded to death and died after a while.

His sacrifice led to the freedom of the town, so the inhabitants decided to thank him by adding a bull to the pantheon of their Gods, by giving its name to the town and by placing the image of a bull on their flag.

What do you think of the legend about the origins of Turin? If you found it interesting or crazy enough, don’t forget to share it!
