Last Modified: February 2, 2022

During summer and spring many Italian cities organize historical events. One of these events is organized by the town of Cuorgné in May.

Cuorgné is a town in Piedmont that every year holds a tournament called May Tournament at the court of king Arduino to celebrate the coronation of Arduino as king of Italy in 1002.

Arduino was an Italian nobleman who was elected King of Italy by the Italian nobles in 1002, after the Emperor Otto III died. Arduino was the first non-German king in 41 years. His reign didn’t last long, however, because he was dethroned in 1014 by Henry II, cousin of Emperor Otto II and rightful heir.

Il torneo di maggio – The May Tournament

The tournament is usually held in the third week of May. A good number of people participate in the event. Some of them are dressed in medieval costumes and represent the seven Cuorgnatesi borghi: Borgo San Giovanni, Borgo San Luigi, Borgo San Rocco, Borgo Ronchi San Bernardo and Maddalena, Borgo Sant’Anna, Borgo San Faustino, and Borgo San Giacomo.

The tournament generally starts with the investiture of King Arduino and his wife, Queen Berta.

The events that follow are different from year to year, although some of them are always the same. Some of the recurring events are the historical procession, the challenge of the drums, where some members of the seven borghi perform in front of a jury, and the barrel race, where two members of each borgo have to push a big barrel through the streets of the historic center.

Some other events that can be organized are the equestrian competition, a horse speed race, the archery competition, the sword of the king, where some medieval combat experts dress in costumes and compete in a duel with their sword and shield.

Of course, dances, food, and parties are an essential part of the yearly May tournament!

So, if you happen to be in Italy in May, possibly in Turin or nearby, don’t forget to go to Cuorgné to participate in this wonderful Italian medieval tournament!
