Palio of the boats: Il palio delle Barche sul Trasimeno

Last Modified: July 12, 2021

In Italy many events take often place in small towns. One of these spectacular events happens in Passignano sul Trasimeno, a municipality in the Province of Perugia in July.

I’m talking about the Palio of the boats, a peculiar event that is definitely worth seeing.

Palio delle barche – Palio of the boats

The palio of the boats has been organized to recall the last act of hostility between the noble families Baglioni and Oddi.

In fact, some time ago, in 1945, there was a bloody battle where the Oddi family was forced to flee, boats on their shoulders, from the militia of the Baglioni family.

Oggi ogni anno i quattro rioni di Passignano sul Trasimeno – Rione Centro Storico, Rione Centro Due, Rione Oliveto and Rione San Donato – gareggiano in una gara molto speciale che si svolge in tre fasi.

Now every year, the four districts of Passignano sul Trasimeno – Rione Centro Storico, Rione Centro Due, Rione Oliveto and Rione San Donato – compete in a very special race that involves/ three stages.

In the first stage the districts compete in a boat race on the lake and to get to the pier of the town.

Then, during the second stage, the districts compete in a fast race in the historical center, carrying the boat on their shoulders.

Finally, the districts compete in the lake again.

Of course, there are also additional events, food, and music. In short, a must to see if you are in Umbria in July!

Have you ever been to the palio of the boats in Passignano sul Trasimeno? Did you like it?
